The lights dim, the screen comes alive, and the excitement in the theatre is palpable. Some are looking for a chance to travel to places unknown, some to explore another space and time, and others are just there to enjoy a good laugh or cry. Regardless of what’s playing on the screen, everyone in the room is gathered for the same reason – to be entertained.
As the film wraps up and the credits start to roll, it’s impossible not to notice the long list of people that contributed to its creation. From make-up artists to stunt coordinators to grips, film and television production supported over 125,000 full time jobs in Canada last year. Yet these creative men and women rarely get their chance in the spotlight.
That’s why we are so excited to announce that when Canadians visit their local theatres this fall, they will get a glimpse into one of the thousands of people working in Canada who bring magic to television and the movies. Canada’s two largest theatre operators, Cineplex Entertainment and Landmark Cinemas, will be playing a special Canadian “I Make Movies” spot during their pre-shows, for a limited engagement beginning September 1, 2015.
The “I Make Movies” campaign was produced to raise awareness of the hard work and creativity of those who work behind-the-scenes, and strengthen the message that where you watch matters. The Canadian “I Make Movies” spot profiles Joel Whist, a Special Effects Supervisor in Vancouver, BC, who has worked on over sixty film and television productions to date. Joel is just one of many talented people who not only work in production, but whose creativity was inspired by his childhood experience of watching movies on the big screen.
